If you meditate and would like to explore the possibility of starting a meditation group in your area, we can help! While people meditate on their own every day, people often ask about the benefits of meditating in a group. The two experiences are really two sides of the same coin. Meditation is a solitary activity in the sense that I can’t meditate for you and you can’t meditate for me. But we can meditate together.
Doing so reminds us that we are not alone. It builds a sense of community and helps to enrich our understanding of what meditation is about. It deepens our a sense of connectedness and community. It also affirms and sustains us in our daily practice. For this reason meditation groups have formed around the world. They meet in churches, homes, schools, hospitals, universities, prisons and places of work. The group is an ideal way to get introduced to meditation and also to sustain your own daily practice.
Each group has its own personality but group meetings generally follow a simple three-step framework: there is time to listen to a brief teaching on meditation, an opportunity to ask questions or share our experience of the practice and an opportunity to meditate together for about 20-30 minutes.
The book A Pearl of Great Price describes the purpose of the meditation group and advice on how to start one. The booklet may be downloaded here.
Our aim is to animate the meditation community in Ireland. We will provide whatever assistance we can to help your group deepen its practice or we can help you to establish a new group. Contact Maria Gavin, 0876634370, mariatgavin@gmail.com for further details. We can, if you wish, arrange for someone to be present at the first meeting to help you get started.
