By now you will have begun to settle back to the normal routines of a new school term and a new calendar year. Every new year brings its own challenges but also wonderful opportunities. May this new year bring about abundant life in you and the children you teach.
In the midst of the business of school life, I hope you will also take time to simply be. This is especially important for children. Meditation is a gift for life that gives rise to practical benefits and deep fruits in their lives.
Practicing meditation across the whole school is a wonderful opportunity to simply be in the moment, letting go of all striving, all doing and just being. The silence and stillness of meditation teach us, through our hearts, who we are at the deepest level of our being. Practicing meditation across the whole school generates fruits also for the whole school community.
Have you restarted meditation with the children in your class this term? If not yet, why not begin today?
When the Song of the Angels is Stilled by Howard Thurman
When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and the princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among brothers,
To make music in the heart.
from The Mood of Christmas and Other Celebrations (Friends United Press, 1985)
While the most important thing is to give the children in your class the opportunity to meditate several times each week, it is also important to chat with the children in your class every now and then, about why we meditate and how we do it. That is why I created a range of short videos, here on YouTube, each of which explains some aspect of meditation in simple language that the children will relate to.
The example on the right explains why we sit during meditation. Why not watch it with your class today or later this week?
And, remember too that you have access to the CD Meditation with Children – Songs and Reflections and the accompanying songbook with the lyrics and music sheets. That is another helpful way of deepening their practice.
